A grieving Victorian father has told a court of the heartache of losing his wife and five-year-old in a crash just days after Christmas.

Jessica West and her son Deighton died when their family car was hit by a semi-trailer near Ballarat on December 29, 2019.

Jessica’s husband Anthony West was behind the wheel of the car and their older son Oakley, then nine, was sitting in the back seat next to his brother at the time.

Anthony and Oakley survived the crash.

Truck driver Michael Knowler was distracted by Google Maps on his phone, which was lying flat on his dashboard, the court heard.

The distraction meant the 60-year-old failed to see a giveway sign and stop in time.
